Crone Medicine, An Ode to the Disseminating Moon. Grandmother Hawthorn.
Crone Medicine, An Ode to the Disseminating Moon. Grandmother Hawthorn.
Crone Medicine, An Ode to the Disseminating Moon. Grandmother Hawthorn.
In a forest of eucalyptus and pine lives a venerable, solitary old Hawthorn tree. Twisted, gnarled and moss-kissed, she has provided nourishment and refuge for years - flowers, berries and branches for bees, insects and birds. Crossing the thresholds of Maiden, to Mother, to Maga and now to Crone, she is wrapped in a cloak patterned with the balsamic wisdom of the Waning Moon. An Elder standing witness to time, from the fixed hearth of her deep rooted home she tends the green world and it’s wild kin. Occasionally, a single cluster of wilting flowers is found amongst her branches, seeking the comfort and dissemination awaiting them on the forest floor.
Grandmother Hawthorn is one of the most precious, welcoming allies I’ve ever come across in the Green World. Usually Hawthorn trees form long hedgerows, but this old tree was standing alone, a little clearing around her amongst the eucalypt and pine filled bush. I waited and waited for her to flower one spring, and when she didn’t (save one or two little bunches that had already wilted by the time i found them) I realised what a true Grandmother she is. There comes a time in a humans life where what and how they give shifts. And rather than producing things that pull our body’s earthly resources, we instead offer from our hearts and minds - wisdom, understanding, and deep listening. It is for us to sit at her feet, and receive what she can give with ease. To remember with humility and respect the place our elders hold, and to remember that regardless of age, we all have the wise crone archetype within. This essence invites you to connect with a slower pace, honouring the inner elder and calling them forth with heart and holding.
This Wilted Hawthorn essence resonates with the Tarot cards Death, the Hermit, the Ten of Wands and the Ten of Pentacles. It could be considered an antidote to problematic or reversed Two of Pentacles or Two of Wands energy, where youthful impatience or over commitment could benefit from an elders wisdom. In ritual, this essence carries the frequency of dusk, and could be useful in issues of underworlds, release, surrender and eldership.
Grandmother Hawthorn can be called upon to:
connect with the Crone archetype within and without, and open yourself to the wisdom of eldership
embrace themes of slowing down, letting go and decay
learn to tend and offer of yourself in ways that are simultaneously generous, and more sustainable for you
navigating territories with themes of dissemination, release and endings
work with the Tarot cards Death, the Hermit, the Ten of Wands and the Ten of Pentacles
